How To ‘Ditch’ Your Phone Fear Once & For All!

Does your heart start MADLY beating just from the thought of you getting on the phone with your prospects? Does your breath shorten? Do you tense up, get anxious or freeze?

Do you come up with every excuse possible for not having a phone conversation? Are you AFRAID of the phone and speaking on it with your prospects?

Not for long you won’t…

First, you are not alone. Being afraid to talk with my prospects on the phone was the first thing I had to overcome at a sales job I had, way before I started in this industry.

You see, most people are afraid of this. If you don’t fix it, it will CRITICALLY sabotage your progress and success. I don’t want that for you and I am pretty sure you don’t want it for yourself… so let’s move on.

Without going into the detailed psychological analysis of fear and thoughts, simply put, you feel afraid because you are focusing on the problems, things you cannot do, what could go wrong, and what will ‘they’ say.

 

You are not being present in the moment.

Because of this, you become emotionally reactive, completely unaware and at the MERCY of your emotion. Your prospects will “sniff” your fear, and your chances of helping and doing business with them takes off to the clouds.

If you want to become an ‘electrifying’ leader (and I hope you do), you have to put an end to this by undertaking one of the most challenging journeys in your life, to master your mind and your emotions. This is a pre-requisite to the success that you seek, NOT an option.

Only then can you really understand fear and how exactly to deal with it.

This topic by itself is fascinating, invaluable, powerful and one of the main reasons this blog exist. So check out some of the other blog posts for more of an in-depth description about it.

But what I want to do in this post is share with you proven techniques that you can start using IMMEDIATELY to help free you from the fear of the phone. I want to do this without going into why they work… I will leave that to other posts.

So to keep it simple, you overcome your phone fear by practicing some of your leadership skills, here is what I recommend you do:

1. Avoid the failure mindset at ANY cost and develop a success mindset

Understanding that your mind is an astonishing tool that drives your emotions, and how to harness that power to your advantage is the foundation of your success, including the mastery over fear… and not just phone fear.

If you don’t proactively develop this, then it is most certain that the failure mindset is BREEDING.

2. Be aware

Developing awareness is incredibly rewarding. As a leader, one of the things you want to be aware of is how your thoughts affect your emotions, and your physiology. The other way around is also true. This have a direct effect on your actions, results and whether your experience your phone fears or not.

3. Use the body to your advantage

I’ve explained this here. Be aware of what foods you eat, especially before you get on the phone.  Stick to healthy balanced food and avoid heavy meals. This affects if you are in the “zone” or not, allow you to have a stronger frame, and helps you feel more confident!

Oh yeah, and EXERCISE!

4. Listen to your prospect

Focus on your prospect and listen carefully to what they are saying. Expect that your prospects, will bring out their fears throughout the conversation with you. If you are in a state of awareness and listening attentively, you can stay above it and be emotionally unreactive (no fear, being defensive…).

If not, too bad for you!

Only when you are aware and developed a success mindset can you then understand your prospect and deal with their objections in a very subtle way, to help them get closer to their goal.

In summary…

Phone fear (and other fears) does not exist unless you focus on it and make it real. Obviously, if you feel fear when a freight train is heading towards you, then you want to focus on it and do something about it!

But why fear talking on the phone with your prospect, what’s the worse that could happen? Seriously?

    Hi, John,

    Great sharing there! Thank you…hopefully this can help a lot of other fellow network marketers to move forward.

    I learned a lot of useful communication skills from Tim Sales. One of the ways that Tim used to master his communication skill (not specifically over phone) is to just say ‘Hi’ to people… then he would start saying ‘Hi, my name is…’ then he would go on to practise and practise more. His emphasis is on role play until new distributors get good.

    While role play can help, there is nothing like REAL action – really getting into the game and just call people up. For me, practice on old leads helped a lot. Going through a training bootcamp is another thing that has been very helpful too.

      Hey Viola, your welcome :) I agree with you, simply saying ‘hi’ to people can be a great way to initiate a conversation… we do it all the time, yet when it comes to biz people freeze… REAL action is KING!
